As human beings, we are naturally more comfortable with those we consider the same as us. “Samesies” is one of the first ways of forming a relationship with another human being. This is also a survival instinct. We feel we can trust someone who is the “same.” Yet we must also remember that what we consider the ‘same’ is a learned concept. As human beings, we are able to move beyond “samesies” in our relationships and discover the wonder of diversity and the richness it brings to our lives and relationships. While we might not feel we understand another person, because they are not the “same” as us in age, gender, who they love, cultural background, etc., as disciples of Jesus, we are committed to drawing wide the circle of inclusion. The grace of God expands our ability to offer love, care and understanding.
