I Wish our Children Didn't Need to Experience This

Frodo Gandalf1

"I wish it need not have happened in my time,” said Frodo. “So do I,” said Gandalf, “and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” from The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien

We too might find ourselves wishing that this pandemic hadn’t happened in our time. We might find ourselves grieving that our children and grandchildren and the children, youth and young adults we are connected with have had to go through the challenges and changes of this pandemic time. We wonder how it will affect the rest of their lives.

Yet, what we know through our faith in God is that we are created as adaptable, creative people, able to find our way through adversity. The Bible is filled with stories of people who have faced challenges and difficulties and who, with their faith in God to strengthen them, have found their way through. We would never wish a pandemic upon our children and grandchildren or ourselves and our neighbours. It just happens.

As human beings, we have resiliency built into us.  When we care for and support one another, we will find our way through this and bounce back.  Here in High River we know that to be true since we bounced back from the flood - lots of tears and losses along the way, but we did do it.

As we move into the time when the pandemic is behind us, what will we be able to say about the decisions we have made and how we lived our faith through this time?

But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us.  We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed.

                    2 Corinthians 4:7-9
