Knowing God through the Sacraments

The United Church of Canada, as a Protestant church, recognizes two sacraments, baptism and communion. Sacraments are sacred rituals, in which we use ordinary elements to demonstrate the extraordinary love of God. Water, bread and juice become the means for us to experience God’s unconditional, welcoming love.

Think back to baptisms and communion services of which you have been a part. What aspects of each of these rituals are most moving or inspirational for you?

If you've never participated in a baptism or communion service, would you like to know more about how we share and show God's love through these two sacred rituals?

Within the United Church, these sacraments are meant to be shared within community, though in certain circumstances baptism and communion can be offered outside of the gathered worshipping community. This prayer that we often pray at the conclusion of communion expresses the understanding that sharing the sacraments is meant to be a blessing not only to individuals but to the congregation as a whole:

For the bread we have tasted,

for the cup we have received,

we give you thanks, gracious God.

May the sharing of this meal

build the unity and strength of this congregation.

May it so put its mark upon us, that we may stay firm

in the hope you have set before us.

We offer ourselves, all that we have and all that we are,

to serve you faithfully in the world,

through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

How has participating in the sacraments of baptism and communion put their mark upon you as you see to faithfully follow the way of Jesus?    What other actions or words have placed a sacred mark upon you?

With love and prayers,

Rev. Susan & Rev. David
