Passage: Psalms 23:1-6 & Luke 2:8-16
Description: Rest in God – rest in the one who provides daily what we need for nourishment, rest in the one who comes with healing and hope, rest in the one who is more than we can imagine, rest in the one of whom the angels sang and the shepherds stood in awe. Come to the manger this Christmas and discover that God is already here – with all you could ever need. God is with us – that is the gift of Christmas! As Augustine said, “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.”

Description: Snow may be on the ground but today we are going to explore the spiritual meaning of springtime. Earlier this fall we journeyed through summer (the time of growth, vibrancy and life at its fullest), autumn (the time of gathering in the harvest, of celebrating abundance and of letting go and releasing), and winter (the time of rest, of stillness, of allowing ourselves not to be productive as we deal with trauma and grief). So now we contemplate springtime, and what we can learn from the physical season of the year as wisdom for our spiritual lives?

Passage: Job 12:7-10 & Psalms 19:1-14
Description: We want God to speak to us. We want divine answers to the suffering, challenges and disasters we face in life. But what if the problem is not that God isn’t speaking to us; what if the problem is that we aren’t listening, that we are so afraid of being able to hear ourselves think, that we fill our lives with noise and busyness to the extent that we also can’t hear God speak? Now granted, listening to God is a special listening: it is listening to silence. It is listening for words that are not words. At the same time, I think the messages are loud and clear. Just ask the animals, ask the plants, ask the bees.

Passage: Isaiah 25:6-10 & Psalms 121:1-8
Description: I lift up my eyes to the mountains, from where will my help come? declares the writer of Psalm 121. In the Bible, big things happen on mountains; magnificent, spectacular, spiritual things. The mountain is the place where you meet God, if you dare..... but how do we view the mountains if something bad has happened, such as flood waters raging down from the headwaters in the mountains? How do we make sense of Psalm 121 which says that God will protect us?

Passage: Mark 4:33-41 & Acts 27:1-44
Description: In our spiritual and emotional lives, there are winters. Sometimes we choose the winter – a time of rest, of stepping back and reassessing, a time of releasing what we’ve always done and giving ourselves space before embracing something new. Great creativity can come out of a chosen time of rest and non-productivity. But there are also the winters we don’t choose – the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, betrayal by a friend, aging or a flood disaster. What does scripture teach us about surving these winters that hit us like a storm?
