August 1 - Anniversary of Abolition of Slavery in Canada

Did you know that August 1st is the anniversary of the Ending of Slavery in Canada? We hear so much about abolition in the United States. Yet, slavery existed in Canada, too, even as the Underground Railroad was bringing those escaping slavery to Canada. Officially, on August 1st, 1834 the Slavery Abolition Act came into effect, ending slavery in the British Empire. Still, the biased belief that White people are superior to Black (and other racialized) people and more deserving of privileges in society exists to today. Honouring August 1st as the ending of enslavement of Black people reminds us that this systemic racism needs to be rooted out of our society.
