David’s Reflections on Psalms 19

“In the heavens he has set a tent for the sun,

which comes out like a bridegroom from his wedding canopy, and like a strong man runs its course with joy.” (Ps.19:4b-5)

I think this is one of my favourite psalms. The imagery, the poetry and the comfort it provides are remarkable. And I suspect as you read through this psalm, you will notice phrases that are familiar, especially the last verse.

As we move through spring and into the longer days and shorter nights, I am especially mindful of the sun. Sometimes, Susan and I are busy with household chores and activities only to realize that with the longer light, it’s already 9:30 at night and we haven’t eaten supper yet! The sun is spending much less time in its “tent”.

But what a beautiful image that is… a tent set in the heavens for the sun which comes out like a bridegroom from his wedding canopy. It’s such a joyous, expectant and hopeful image. This is how the sun emerges from night and brings light to the world!

As we move into late spring and early summer with a month of lengthening days before us—as the sun spends even more time out of its tent, and we spend more time out of our tent exploring safe driveway gatherings and backyard time with friends, family or… the garden—may we welcome the sun’s expectant, joyful light and give praise to God as its creator.

Now the earth warms as the expectant, joyful sun emerges from its tent to wake the soil, the trees, the tulips… and us too as we wake to God’s greatness and goodness. God is good! Yes, we are living in a time of disruption but God is good! Praise be!

With love and blessings,

Rev. Susan & Rev. David
