For Families - March 23, 2020

Hello HRUC families,

It’s Monday.  Your kids have been home from school for a week now.  You may be off work or working from home.  You may be wondering how you are going to pay the bills.  We are all wondering just how long this is going to last – and no one has the answer to that.

What we can do is to stay connected with each other while apart.  Go to our website to check out the latest updates under announcements.  Later this week, we hope to have a video uploaded so that David and I can share a message with you – “face to face.”  www.highriverunitedchurch.org

Eran & I will keep sharing ideas with you throughout this time.

Faith is learned at home – and faith if “for such a time as this.” This is why we bring our kids to church and teach them about God and following the Way of Jesus – so that in times such as these, we have our faith to lean into; we have the peace of God to bring alongside our alarm.

A couple of ideas for today:

  1. Make time each day to read a book as a family.  Two books I’d suggest to start: Winnie the Pooh by A.A.Milne (the original book, not the adaptations out there).  and “A Wrinkle in Time” by Madeline L’Engle.
  2. A some point in the day, have a faith moment.  Light a candle, share one of the A to Z Bible Verses (attached), and pray together (invite everyone to name what you are thankful for, then what you are concerned about (but parents keep your deepest concerns to yourself and other adults). A_to_Z_Bible_Verses.pdf
  3. Remind the kids and youth of the prayer boxes they made a year ago. If they didn’t make one, they could make one now – use a small box or tin & decorate it.  Then before bed, write or draw any worries or anything you’d like God to know.  Put the papers in the box – and then leave them there for God to handle while you are sleeping.  God doesn’t do magic for us but God’s love keeps working with us and helping us find a way.

Life isn’t easy right now.  Take a deep breath.

We are in this together, and God is with us.

Love is the way through this.

Know that you are held in my heart today,

Rev. Susan
